3rd Street Bethel AME Church

 

3rd Street Bethel AME Church is one of the vibrant and historic African American churches in Richmond VA. Their church is a place where the love of God is shared through worship, fellowship, and service. The church was founded in 1841 by a group of free African Americans who purchased a lot on 3rd Street between Broad and Marshall Streets. As one of the original black baptist churches in Richmond VA, its building was completed in 1843 and was one of the first brick buildings erected by African Americans in Richmond. In 1859, the congregation built a new church on the same site, which is the building that stands today.

The 3rd Street Bethel AME Church has a rich history of involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1963, our church served as a headquarters for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during his visit to Richmond. We also hosted a march from our church to the Virginia State Capitol to protest segregation in public schools.

The current pastor is Rev. Reverend Reuben J. Boyd, Jr. Under his leadership, we continue to be an active and engaged congregation striving to make a difference in our city and our world.
